Richard Corbin Byrd (1837-1925): The Byrd family has a history dating to the 1600s. The wife of Capt. Byrd was Ann Gordon Marshall, a descendant of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States. Capt. Byrd was part of the Army of Northern Virginia; Byrd had a significant military career rising from private to full colonel. He fought in the trenches of Petersburg and commanded a small group who surrendered at Appomattox.
