William M. Gist (1840-1863) served in Co. E, South Carolina 1st Infantry, and Co. B, SC 15th Infantry. He was promoted through officers ranks to that of major. He was killed in action November 18, 1863, while in command of the 15th Regiment, near Knoxville, Tennessee. Some sources note him as colonel but I found no record of such promotion in his military records.
