CSA 12a, 10¢ milky blue (4 close to large margins) tied beautifully struck RICHMOND Va. JUN 9 1863 circular datestamp (Powell type 5a) on fresh cover to Captain J.W. Cringan Q.M. Irish Battalion, care Major D.B. Bridgeford Provost Marshal A.N.Va., slightly reduced at left. Ex Harry Muldrow. $250.

John Williams Cringan (1833-1909), a Richmond merchant, enlisted July 17, 1861, as a captain and was commissioned into Field & Staff of Virginia 1st Battalion Infantry as Captain and Assistant Quartermaster. On May 15, 1864, he was transferred to Virginia 24th Cavalry. His name is also seen as Crigan. He graduated from VMI in 1853. He worked in New York from 1857-1861, when he returned to serve Virginia in the war.
