Paid AUG 22 186- (Welch type AN-18a – a RARE CIVIL WAR USE OF THIS POSTMARK) on neat commercially made envelope addressed to Miss Minnie Mordecai, Hon. M.C. Mordecai, Columbia, S.C. Moses Cohen Mordecai (1804-1888) was a wealthy shipping tycoon, a South Carolina senator, and Charleston’s most prominent Jewish citizen in the years before the war. Minnie (who went by Rachel) was his daughter. Lovely piece of Judaica. $200.
