CSA 1, 5¢ green pair (scissor cut left stamp) tied by two light strikes of light ABBEVILLE / S.C. // JUL 6 cds on cover to Samuel W. Cochran, Co. G Orrs RR South Carolina Hospital Petersburg Va with neat strike of MANCHESTER / VA. cds and manuscript “Due 5” and “Miscarried.” Interesting use. Ex RH Morris and Paul Benson. $225.

Samuel W. Cochran served in Orr’s Rifle Regiment (1st South Carolina Rifles). Company G was known as the Marshall Riflemen or Abbeville Riflemen, Abbeville District, with Capt. G. McDuffie Miller, commanding. On the muster roll of March and April 1862, he is shown absent from duty and in South Carolina Hospital, Richmond. He is further shown as wounded June 27, 1862, and admitted to General Hospital No 21, Richmond with vulnus sclopetarium - the quaint, mystifying term that is translated as gunshot wound.  A claim was filed by Elizabeth Cochran, widow, on September 20, 1862, yet he is shown as “absent, wounded” in October 1862. Far be it for me to explain. The cover is addressed to him in Petersburg but military records state Richmond.
