Enola post office (Louisiana) was established December 17, 1861. The first postmaster was S.E. Chamberlain, appointed on that day. The second postmaster was George Douglas, appointed less than four months later on April 7, 1862. The post office was in Tensas Parish. Enola Plantation (doubtless where the post office was located) was owned by William Wright Beck in 1860. It was also known as Oakwood, originally part of Enola Plantation but split in the 1890s. Oakwood is located about 3 miles north of Waterproof, La., on the Mississippi River. Thomas Beck was on the board of Trustees at Oakland College (1826-1861) in Port Gibson, Miss. Oakland College was closed during the Civil War; it reopened as Chamberlain Hunt Academy. The academy was moved to another location, and the original Oakland College site became Alcorn State University (1871-1878), the first public black land-grant research university; it is adjacent to Lorman, Miss.
