George Washington Wortham (1823-1883) was a 38-year-old lawyer when he enlisted April 22, 1861, as a captain in Co. D, North Carolina 12th Infantry, Granville Grays. In April of the next year he was transferred to Field & Staff, North Carolina 50th Infantry. By November 1863, he was promoted to full colonel. He resumed the practice of law after the war at Oxford, NC.
