Mann Satterwhite Valentine, Jr. (1892-1893) of Richmond, Virginia, was the son of Mann Satterwhite Valentine and Elizabeth Mosby Valentine; he married Ann Maria Gary and had 10 children. He was educated at private schools in Richmond and Charlottesville and William and Mary in Williamsburg where he did not finish studies due to health issues; his main interest in school was science. He was a successful merchant and manufacturer of Valentine Meat Juice (a health tonic) and an artifact collector. He was a lover of history and, as such, the founder of the renowned Valentine Museum in Richmond in 1892, the first private museum in the city. He died the following year leaving his personal collection to the museum; his brother Edward became president. Edward had a fabulous collection in his own right and left an incredible collection to further the museum. For more than 100 years, the Valentine Museum has collected, preserved and interpreted the materials of Richmond’s life and history.
