John M. Hogshead mustered in as 3rd corporal on May 15, 1861 into Grenada Rifles, Capt. W. S. Statham. The company was reorganized in May 1862. He was promoted to corporal in June and later to Sergt. He was detailed as a MUSICIAN IN THE REGIMENTAL BRASS BAND on 24 Sept. 1862. He is described as being of light complexion, light hair, blue eyes, 6’ tall and 25 years old upon enlistment
