Jefferson W. Stubbs (1811-1897) of Gloucester County, Virginia, operated a store in Cappahosic during and after the Civil War. He and his wife, Mollie, had at least four sons and a daughter—William J., James N., Jefferson, Thomas J., and Lucy. James attended the College of William and Mary and law school at Lexington Law School. Thomas attended and eventually taught at the College of William and Mary and the State Male Normal College of Virginia in Williamsburg. All of the sons except Thomas fought in the Civil War. Their family papers are at Louisiana State University Libraries. He was the presiding Justice of Gloucester County from 1850 to 1866, when he was removed by U.S. reconstruction forces.
