CSA 1, 5¢ green (4-margin with small tear and crease) tied RANDOLPH MACON COLLEGE VA JAN 24 (1862) circle datestamp on cover to Jeff W. Stubbs Esqr., Cappahosic Va. Back flap embossed with blue Randolph Macon College oval (VA-12, CV $750). The back flap has been cut and folded over for display purposes. This is also a TURNED COVER with inside a handcarried use to Miss N.A. Jones c/o Dr. JP. Boisseau, Dinwiddie, Va. Ex Conrad Bush and David Burton. $650.

Jefferson W. Stubbs
(1811-1897) of Gloucester County, Virginia, operated a store in Cappahosic during and after the Civil War. He and his wife, Mollie, had at least four sons and a daughter—William J., James N., Jefferson, Thomas J., and Lucy. James attended the College of William and Mary and law school at Lexington Law School. Thomas attended and eventually taught at the College of William and Mary and the State Male Normal College of Virginia in Williamsburg. All of the sons except Thomas fought in the Civil War. Their family papers are at Louisiana State University Libraries. He was the presiding Justice of Gloucester County from 1850 to 1866, when he was removed by U.S. reconstruction forces.
