CSA 11, 10¢ blue (3 margins, tied by blue COLUMBIA S.C., JAN 12 cds to Col. W.C. Butler (later General), Chappells Depot (Michlans Mail - ?) S.C. on Southern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Columbian, S.C., fancy scrolled corner card with original matching letterhead See letterhead page 1 and page 2 (the blue underlined links) dated Dec. 27, 1864, and additional letterhead certificate, shown with the cover. Very Fine.  The "Michlan's Mail" - if that is how it should read - is a conundrum. Presumably this is a private carrier, but I could find no information on it. It is a worthy project for the ambitious postal historian. $275.

CSA Brig. Gen. Matthew Calbraith Butler (1836–1909) was a Confederate soldier, a U.S. military commander (Maj. General of U.S. Volunteers during the Spanish American War), attorney, politician, and slaveholder. He served in the cavalry in the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Lots more info available online.
