CARTER’S BRIDGE / VA cds with matching PAID / 5 (ms) [1861] on clean cover to Lieut Col. James L. Hubard, 44th Regiment of Va. Volunteers, Monterey, Highland Co, Virginia with endorsement of “Rev. Richd W McIlwaine, Chaplain 44th Regt V[a] V[ol] and “Carters Bridge Albemarle”. Address crossed out and forwarded back to Carter’s Bridge, Albemarle Co., Va.; small flap faults; Richard McIlwaine was promoted to Chaplain 7-19-62 but resigned 8-15-62 due to ill health thus there was a very narrow opportunity for dating this cover; Ex Kohn, Thayer and Thacker. Will be the subject of “The Confederate Post” column in American Stamp Dealer & Collector.  $350.


James Lenaeus Hubard (1835-1913) enlisted as a private 6-14-61 in Field & Staff 44th Virginia Infanty, was detailed as special agent for the Ordnance Dept;applied for commission in artillery but was returned to 44th; applied as Judge Advocate 10-7-62; promoted to Major 11-27-62 (Major and QM for Robertson’s Cavalry); taken prisoner 4-3-65 very close to end of hostilities at Amelia C.H., Va. and confined to Point Lookout where he took the Oath of Allegiance 5-1-65. The 44th was part of the Army of Northern Virginia and saw action from the Seven Days’ Battles to Cold Harbor, as well as the Shenandoah Valley under Early and Appomattox where only 1 officer and 12 men were surrendered. VMI records show Hubard as Lt. Col. Buckingham’s Company Cavalry.  Born in Buckingham Co., Va.; VMI Class of 1855, married Isaetta Carter Randolph. Career: Farmer, Lawyer, Journalist.  (military records included)

Richard McIlwaine enlisted 6-8-61 at Amelia Court House, Va. as a 2nd Lieut in Co. H, 44th Va. Infantry. He was promoted to Chaplain 7-19-62 but resigned 8-15-62 due to ill health. He was awarded the prestigious Southern Cross of Honor the equivalent to the US Medal of Honor. He attended UVA 1853-55 and was eminent President of Hampden-Sydney Collete 1883-1904.
