NEWBERRY C.H. / S.C. // JUL / 28 (1863) CDS with matching PAID X (CC Type D, CV $200) on slightly war-weary cover to W. W. Renwick, Esqr., Lyle’s Ford, U.&S.R.R. (Union and Spartanburg Railroad), S.C. Original short business letter to Renwick from John R. Leavell A.D.C., ms. pencil docketing “Tax receipt” at right edge. $140.  

Lyle’s Ford, originally an Indian Trading Post, was a settlement on the Broad River in the Newberry District of South Carolina. 

William W. Renwickwas master of Orange Hall Plantation at Goshen Hill, a slave-owner and cotton planter. His papers are in the South Carolina Library at USC. John R. Leavell served as a private in Company F, 2nd South Carolina State Troops. Enrolled August 1, 1863, for 6 months. The unit was composed of companies formed in July 1863 from various regiments of the SC Militia; this company was from the 39th Regiment SC Militia.
