CSA 11-ADc, 10¢ greenish blue (lower left corner crease) tied TUSKALOOSA ALA NOV 16 (1863) CDS on wallpaper cover of pale leaf and vine design; addressed to Capt. George Little, Care of Col. Olladowski (sic), Chief Engineer, Army Tenn., Chattanooga. A lovely little wallpaper cover with a scarce Polish connection. $900.

Hypolite Oladowski (abt. 1798-1878) was a native of Poland. Oladowski's service to the Confederacy includes a tenure on the staff of General Albert Sidney Johnston. At the rank of Captain, he served this general officer as an Ordnance Officer (OO) while assigned to the Army of Tennessee. He served General Braxton Bragg in the same position. Detailed military records included. Although he died in Columbus, Georgia, his grave site is in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile, Alabama. He served in the Polish National Uprising in 1830 and the Mexican War. Prior to Civil War, he was a Sergeant of Ordnance at the US Arsenal at Baton Rouge, LA. According to Oladowski, the Washington Artillery fired almost 20% of the Confederate rounds expended during the three days’ fighting at Chickamauga. This cover was sent roughly two months after Chickamauga. Fascinating obituary on Oladowski in the Columbus Daily Enquirer Aug 17, 1978, at his Find A Grave memorial. After the fall of the Confederacy, he lived a hermit’s life for a year on an uninhabited island on the Pacific coast.

George W. Little was a 2nd lieutenant in Co. K. 29th Alabama Infantry. Before the war he was a chemistry professor at Oakland College, Mississippi.
