Eliza JANE Hardman Wells (1840-1905) went by her middle name as did her husband. The love note is addressed to Jane. She married George RILEY Wells (1838-1919) April 12, 1866. I am unsure whether this love note was from him or another suitor. I’d like to think it was him. Wells enlisted September 26, 1861, and served in Co. C, Wright’s Legion as well as Co. D, 38th Infantry Regiment. He was wounded in the Battle of Second Manassas and was wounded again in the right wrist at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse on May 5, 1864. He was captured at the Battle of Fishers Hill on September 22, 1864, and sent to Fort Delaware. He was released on June 17, 1865. He was a leading dry goods and grocery merchant in Stone Mountain.
