Timberlake, Ayletts P.O., King William Co(unty) Virginia Care Henry Timberlake. With mandated endorsement from Lt. Timberlake, Prisoner of War at upper left. On back flaps is a contemporaneous manuscript March 29 1864 Point Lookout MD Lt. Geo. A. Timberlake Prisoner of War Care Capt. Patterson.  $500.

George A. Timberlake of New Kent County, Virginia, enlisted May 11, 1861, at West Point, Va., as a 4th sergeant. He rose quickly through the ranks to 2nd Lieut. He is described at 5’6” tall, dark complexion, gray eyes, dark hair. Records show him captured at Gettysburg but there is no record of imprisonment (clerical error?). John C. Timberlake (final rank Lt. Col.), also of the same regiment and almost assuredly related, was captured at Gettysburg. Most records for George related to 1864, where he is shown captured March 3, 1864, by Gen. Kirkpatrick’s Cavalry at Barnesville, Va. From there, he was confined at Yorktown, Fort Monroe, Point Lookout, and finally in Fort Delaware where he took the Oath of Allegiance June 16, 1865.
