AUG 17 on prisoner cover to Mr. A. Hutcheson Richmond Va., with manuscript directive “By Flag Truce Via Fortress Monroe.” Type 1 censor oval from Fort Delaware, 1986 PF certificate 0157768. This was likely from Andrew J. Hutcheson who is the only soldier of that name listed in the military records as a POW. Ex Raysor. $1,300.

Andrew J. Hutcheson, of Clayton County, Ga., mustered into Company D (Estes Guards), Georgia 44th Infantry on July 7, 1862. He was taken prisoner May 10, 1864, at Spotsylvania, paroled September 14, 1864, at Fort Delaware, and exchanged at Aiken’s Landing a few days later. He was taken prisoner again April 6, 1865, at High Bridge (across the Appomattox River), Va., during Lee’s final retreat from Petersburg, only 3 days before Lee’s surrender at Appomattox (25 miles away); he was released June 15, 1865.
