JOHNSON’S ISLAND, SANDUSKY, OHIO: US #65, 3¢ rose tied segmented cork cancel on POW cover to “Lieut Thomas H. B. Randloph, A.D.C.C. Brig. Genl. Pendleton, Prisoner of War, Johnson’s Island” and “Per Flag of Truce”, bold G.F.Y. oval examined marking on back flaps, Old Point Comfort cds, small tear at top not affecting stamp or markings. Military records included. [OH] [VA] $450.

Thomas Hugh Burwell Randolph (1843-1900) enlisted 4-18-61 at age 18 at Millwood Va as a corporal in Co. C, 2nd VA Infantry. He was wounded at Manassas in the left breast, returned a few months later and in mid-1862 was detailed to General Pendleton’s staff. He was taken prisoner 12-5-1962 at Rappahannock Station, Va and confined variously to Old Capitol Prison in D.C., Camp Chase and finally Johnson’s Island where he took the Oath of Allegiance on 6-12-1965. He rose to the rank of 2nd Lieut and was described as 6’2” tall, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He married E. Page Burwell of “Carter Hall” in 1869.
