A.J. Powell
is possibly the same A.J. Powell who became Brig. Gen. commanding the Third Brigade Louisiana Mounted Troops but needs more research. On April 24, 1862, Maj. Gen. John Lewis ordered Powell to ready New Orleans’ cotton stores to be destroyed as Union forces advanced on the city. In 1858, A.J. Powell entered a bid to conduct mail route 8164 to transport mail from New Orleans to St. Francisville, 170 miles and back four times a week via steamboats. Although he was the high bidder, the contract went for $20,000 to another.
