Private James Edwin Ott (1845-1932) of Company B, 23rd Virginia Cavalry – this cover sent to his mother, Elizabeth Ott. Ott enlisted 3-5-1864 at Shenandoah after serving in the Quartermaster Department. He was hospitalized at the General Hospital at Winchester 7-27-1864, from illness (illegible in records). Returned to the rolls 10-31-64 which coincides with the use of this cover. Appears on list of prisoners of war paroled at Winchester 4-17-65. He is noted at discharge as 19 years old, 5’8”, light complexion and hair, blue eyes. He attended VMI for one year, class of 1865. Merchant, Harrisonburg and Roanoke; Farmer, Stuarts Draft.
