Louis Fortin (1829-1864) enlisted at New Orleans as a captain 12-1-1861 in Company F, Louisiana 30th Infantry, also known as the Sumter Regiment Infantry. Captain Louis Fortin, the commander of the Orleans Guards, fell mortally wounded on August 14, 1864, after the federals fired only one shot. His remains were conveyed from Atlanta by Father Turgis, Chaplain of the regiment, to his family in the parish of St. John the Baptist. Before the war, he had studied medicine, but the brilliant Creole cut short his studies to serve his country.
