CSA 11-AD, 10¢ light blue (4 margins) tied RALEIGH / N.C. double-circle datestamp on imprinted envelope  Adjutant General’s Office, Roll of Honor. (WD-AG-11, CV $750) with Official Business at left, docketed “May 2, 1864, Major James H. Foote,” to W. S. Pettigrew, Esq., Summerville, N.C. gently cleaned. Incredibly interesting group of military records at NARA for a clearly admired officer. I will likely write this story up for one of my columns. Rare imprint with great backstory. $450.

James Henry Foote of Iredell County was a 33 year-old professor from Wake County, NC, when he enlisted 5-16-61 as a captain in Company I, NC 1st Infantry. He was promoted to Major but resigned 1-6-63. He appears on a Rolle of Honor with following notations “Commanded in battles around Richmond, Boonsboro on South Mountain, Sharpsburg and Fredericksburg. Resigned Jan. 6, 1863 and was promoted to Assistant Adj. Gen. N.C. which post he now holds and in charge of the ‘Roll of Honor.’” Special Order No. 70, dated Nov 16 1863, is ordered to Weldon, N.C., on business for his office and returns when it shall be concluded. Another similar on Feb. 4, 1864. One such official record is signed 30 December 1862 with the unmistakable signature “R E Lee, Genl.” Foote received his A.B. from Wake Forest College in 1852, and his A.M. in 1856. He was a teacher in Farmington and Taylorsville, 1852-59, and professor at Wake Forest College, 1859-61. He was a teacher in Warrenton, Raleigh, and Wilkes counties. He served as Assistant U.S. Marshal, and as member of the General Assembly of North Carolina. His papers are in Special Collections & Archives at Wake Forest University.
