Item# 15558

CSA 1, 5¢ green, Stone 2, position 34 (plated by E. S. Knapp) tied by YORKTOWN / Va. // APR / 20 [1862] cds with second strike on semi-official of QUARTERMASTER’S OFFICE / CAMP PICKENS (MANASSAS.) with printed “Official Business” and scrolls to either side (CSA Catalog type WD-QM-30). Imprint pencil strengthened. Addressed to Mrs. George T. Whittington, Care of Whitmer & Brothers, Main Street, Richmond, Va. Posted during McClellan’s Siege on Yorktown. Military records included. Ex Brandon. $325.

George T. Whittington enlisted as a captain on April 25, 1861, into Virginia State Line. He was transferred in July to Co. C, 19th VA Battalion Heavy Artillery. He was taken prisoner at Sailor’s Creek, VA on 4-6-1865 and is shown as confined to Old Capitol Prison 4-10-65, transferred to Johnson’s Island 4-25-65 and returned to Old Capitol 5-29-65, where paroled 5-31-65. Doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense in the prison timeline and the records could be in error, as many are.
