Confederate use of captured U.S. Ordnance Bureau envelope utilized by South Carolina Militia forces after the capture of the Charleston Arsenal in December of 1860 by the 17th Regiment of Infantry, South Carolina Militia (S.C.M.). Handcarried to “Capt Thomas Ryan, Com[manding] late U.S. Arsenal” of the 17th South Carolina who had taken possession of the Arsenal. Pencil docketed April 26 [1861] two weeks after the firing on Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861. A nice collateral addition to a Confederate postal history collection. Same imprint and hand-carried to late U.S. Arsenal sold in Siegel sale 1065 (lot 471) of the Calhoun Collection for $550 plus 15% buyer premium in 2014.  $150.
