CSA 11, 10¢ blue (top right corner missing) tied RICHMOND / Va. / NOV / 28 [1863] cds on blue cover with manuscript “Q.M. Generals Office / Official Business” to Mr. Ro[bert]. M. Livingston, Mobile, Ala. with docketing up left side “Q M General Nov 27 1863”. On verso is penciled “Gen. Alexander R. Lawton letter enclosed”. Unfortunately, the letter appears to have been separated over the years. Lawton was seriously wounded early in the morning of September 17, 1862, while defending his portion of the Army of Northern Virginia line at the Battle of Antietam. In August 1863, Lawton became the Confederacy’s second Quartermaster General.[VA] $350.
