Major General Jeremy Francis Gilmer (1818–1883) was a soldier, mapmaker, and civil engineer most noted for his service as the Chief Engineer of the Confederate States Army during the Civil War. As a major general, he oversaw the planning of the elaborate defenses of the city of Atlanta, Ga. 

Brigadier General Edward Porter Alexander (1835–1910) was a military engineer, railroad executive, planter, and author. He served first as an officer in the U.S. Army and later in the Confederate Army. Alexander was the officer in charge of the massive artillery bombardment preceding Pickett's Charge, on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, and is also noted for his early use of signals and observation balloons during combat. After the war, he taught mathematics at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and spent time in Nicaragua.
