CONFEDERATE NAVY: CSA 12a, 10¢ milky blue tied beautifully struck WARRENTON N.C. JUN 24 cds on pristine blue commercially-made laid paper cover addressed to Asst. Surgeon Chas M. Morfit, C.S.N., Care Major Norman Smith, Charleston, S.C. SCARCE CS NAVY use made all the more desirable by the medical connection. Ex Monroe, Myerson and Swap. $700.  

Dr. Charles McLean Morfit (1838-1925) received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and became an Asst. Surgeon in the U.S. Navy in 1861 but resigned the same year to join the C.S. Navy in the same capacity. He served on numerous vessels - CSS Ivy, CSS Arkansas, CSS Stono, CSS Albemarle, CSS Oconee, and CSS Chickamauga. He was captured and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison and Fort McHenry.  

Major Norman Wallace Smith (1830-1908) served the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865, first as Brigade Quarter Master, on the staff of his brother, Gen. William D. Smith, in the defense of Charleston. After, he was Division Quarter Master under Gen. Jos. E. Johnson in the Army of the West; he surrendered at Greensboro, N.C., in 1865.
