Capt. William Aiken Kelly was a corporal in the Carolina Light Infantry, 1st Regiment of Rifles, when the ordinance of secession was passed. With that company he took part in the capture of Castle Pinckney the first overt act of the war, December 27, 1860. He did military service in the harbor until after the capitulation of Fort Sumter. When a company was formed from the ranks of the Carolina Light Infantry, and other volunteers, for service in Virginia, he was chosen second sergeant. This command was known as the Carolina Light Infantry and joined Macey Gregg's 1st regiment of South Carolina Volunteers.

Dr. Edwin Samuel Gaillard was engaged in the practice of medicine until the breaking out of the civil war, at which time he joined the Confederate Army and served until the war closed. At the close of the war Dr. Gaillard practiced his profession in Richmond for three years, afterward moving to Louisville, Ky.

Huge amount of interesting further info accompanies on both Kelly and Gaillard.
