CSA, 5¢ blue single tied grid on homemade NEWSPAPER WRAPPER with manuscript October 3rd ’64 to Mr. Mitchael (sic) Walters, Wytheville Va. SCARCE USE of 5¢ which overpays the 2¢ RATE for newspapers; wrappers are very scarce. Ex Sam Zimmerman. $600.

Mitchell Walters enlisted April 10, 1862, at Russell C.H., Va., as a private. He was mustered in to Company I, Virginia 29th Infantry. He was born in 1842 in Wythe County. Military records show he died at his father’s home December 7, 1862, in Wythe County, Va, of fever after an illness of 15 days, but he is shown on the Muster Roll Nov 1, 1862, to Feb. 28, 1863, so the year date likely in error and should be 1863. Claim for pay was made by heirs February 4, 1864.
