J.F. Denton enlisted as a private in Company H, 17th Regiment Louisiana Infantry. Captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi, July 4, 1863, and paroled there July 10, 1863. Transferred to Company B, 39th Regiment Georgia Infantry April 1, 1864. Admitted to CSA General Hospital at Jackson, Mississippi, November 8, 1864. Returned to duty December 29, 1864. No later record. Not on rolls of Company H, 17th Regiment Louisiana Infantry from October 12, 1861, to February 28, 1863.
