CSA 2-H, 10¢ dark blue Hoyer & Ludwig with 4 huge margins, tied neat TUSCALOOSA AL APR 17 CDS on back flaps. Spectacular stamp regrettably torn in half upon opening. Second clear CDS on face; addressed to Bolling Hall, Montgomery, Alabama. SCV $1,000. $200.

Col. Bolling Hall II (1813-1897) was a plantation owner and operator. He served Alabama as inspector General of the 1st Regiment, Adjutant during the 1836 Creek War and several terms in the legislature. He was wounded at Drewry’s Bluff and was in the Battle of Chickamauga as battalion commander. Five of his sons fought for the Confederacy and this letter was likely from one of them. Much information may be found online on the Hall family which was illustrious back to the Revolutionary War. The family papers are part of the Alabama State Archives and include over 150 letters from his sons to their father during the war.
