CSA 2-H, 10¢ deep blue Hoyer & Ludwig PAIR tied blue UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA / VA // OCT / 16 / [1862] dcds on cover to Miss Bell Cohen, Care Hon. Solomon Cohen, Savannah, Geo; small stamp and cover restorations, back flap reattached, intact wax seal on back flaps, 2020 SCV for a single of cover is $1,000 - this is twice the fun. Nice piece of Judaica. $700.

Solomon Cohen (1802-1875), son of Rev. Moses C. Cohen, was a lawyer in Georgetown, S.C. until 1838 when he moved to Savannah. He represented the Georgetown District in the South Carolina Legislature. After moving to Savannah, he represented Chatham County in the Georgia Legislature. He was on the Board of Alderman of Savannah and served as U.S. Postmaster in Savannah, 1853-1861. In 1860, he was a member of the Georgia delegation to the Democratic convention in Charleston, S.C., where he spoke in favor of reconciliation with the North. At the commencement of the Civil War, he continued to be Postmaster under the Confederate Government. In 1866, he was elected to the U.S. Congress from the First Congressional District of Georgia, but was not admitted.
