Captain John Simonton Wilson was born, reared, educated, married and died in Chester Co. in the State of So. Carolina. Wilson was in the House of Representatives when the Ordinance of Secession was passed, and voted for Secession. When the state seceded and war declared, he was offered a commission, whatever he might desire, by Gov. Pickens. Capt. Wilson modestly declined. Early in the summer of 1861 at age 41, J. S. Wilson gathered and organized a Company of Calvary, furnishing horses, etc. for several of the men. It was later designated as Company D, First Regiment, S. C. Calvary. This company he placed under Mr. Wm. A. Walker (Walker-Gaston Camp). Mr. Walker became Captain and Mr. Wilson went out as First Lieutenant. More detailed bio included with cover.
Dr. William H. Wheeler was a surgeon in the NC Militia, 17th Brigade. Postwar he practiced medicine in North Carolina, although it appears he never went to medical school (likely trained by a preceptor); he was also mayor of Winston-Salem. Hambrecht bio included.
