CSA 12a, 10¢ milky blue tied with usual blurry AUGUSTA Ga. SEP 24 circular datestamp on commercially-made envelope to Louis Manigault, Assistant Med. Dept., Macon, Georgia, with penciled “Not in Key Box BB” at top and under back flap “I hope you have gotten my letters.” $125.

Louis Manigault (1828-1899) traveled and studied extensively in Europe and had a love of art. His zeal for knowledge almost cost him his life near Canton, China, when he and an English army officer were attacked by a mob of enraged Chinamen, and defended themselves with short swords until success came. He traveled 1,000 miles across South America on horseback. He married Frances Elizabeth Matilda “Fannie” Habersham (1835-1868) of Savannah and had 3 sons and 2 daughters. He studied at Yale College. He and his family were wealthy slave-owning rice planters, notably Gowrie Plantation.
