CSA 12, 10¢ blue (4 margins) tied JACKSON (Mississippi) STRAIGHTLINE cancel (scarcer type SL-07A early state with ball on J intact, CCV $1,500) on clean cover to Mrs. Sol. A Browne, Care L. L. Fraser Sr., Mechanicsville P.O., Sumter Dist(rict) So Ca, 2017 CSA certificate. The large Jackson SL was used from late May 1863 to July 1863 (EKU May 29, 1863). This is one of the few that can be definitively dated with the docketing of May 29, 1863, up the left side – VERY EARLY USE, Ex Doug Baker. $1,200.

Ladson Lawrence Fraser, Sr. (1804-1889) was a wealthy slave-owning planter. His son, of the same name, was a lawyer and newspaper editor (Sumter Watchman) who was exempt from military service for medical reasons and helped his father supervise their plantations. Brothers Thomas and William fought in the war. The family papers, 1794-1936, are housed at the South Carolina Historical Society.
