CSA 11, 10¢ blue (3 margins) tied RICHMOND / VA. // JUN cds on oatmeal cover to A. L. Shoemaker, Esq. Estilville (sic), Scott Co., Va. At top in manuscript is Treasury Department, Second Auditor’s Office, Official Business. A nice adversity semi-official use. $250.

Estillville, Virginia, was originally named Winfield after Winfield Scott; in 1817, it was renamed Estillville in honor a Benjamin Estill, a local judge instrumental in the formation Scott county. It was again renamed Gate City in 1886, the name it retains today. Attorney General Rufus Ayers pointed out that proximity to Big Moccasin Gap marked the town as the "Gate Way to the West," one of the boom towns located in southwestern Virginia.
