Robert Oswald Sams (1841-1930) is a famous graduate of the Citadel, unique for at least two reasons. First, he graduated from the Citadel in 1861 and was involved in the entire civil war. Second, most of his career was as an educator, so he wrote a fair amount about his life experiences. he was assistant professor at the Arsenal Academy from April 1862 - May 1865. He described the Citadel cadets firing on the Star of the West in “The First Shots.” After the war, he was principal of a high school in Spartanburg before becoming co-principal of Limestone Female College. He was co-principle of the Gaffney Male and Female Seminary, then rounded out his career as superintendent of the Gaffney Graded School.
