CSA 11-AD, 10¢ blue (4 large balanced margins) tied large boldly struck 34mm postmark of BENNETTSVILLE  S.C. JUN  1 cds on fresh commercially made cover to Capt. J. Edwin Spears, Georgetown, So. Ca.  $250.

James Edwin Spears, a graduate of the South Carolina Military Academy, enlisted 1 Nov 1861 at Charleston as a captain in Co. B, SC 24th Infantry, Gist’s Brigade, Walker’s Division, Longstreet’s Corps, Army of Tennessee. Resigned May 1863, died at home 1864. Military records show his resignation signed by his colonel as “shown himself incompetent and unqualified to discharge the duties of his position” and recommends acceptance which was approved / signed by G.T. Beauregard, Genl Commdg. No reason given. Strong recommendations accompanied his original appointment.
