CSA 1, 5¢ green (4 margins, rich color) tied neat light SAVANNAH / Ga. // Paid / MAR / 20 / 1862 CDS on neat commercially-made cover to Mrs. Lamar Cobb, Macon, Geo. Care of Col. J. B. Lamar; embossed initials “LC” on tip of top back flap and clearly embossed Phlp & Solomons, Agts, Washington, D.C. along envelope edge under unsealed flap. Ex Benson. $250.

Lamar Cobb (1840-1907) was one of 12 children by Howell Cobb and Mary Ann Lamar Cobb (1818-1889). Lamar enrolled in Company B, 2nd Battery Georgia Infantry in April 1861; he was soon appointed sergeant major of the 16th Georgia infantry. In September 1862, he was commissioned first Lieutenant, then captain in June 1863, and major in December 1863. He served on his father's staff as aide to comp and Assistant Adjutant-General. Because of the use of the rank major, this cover is more likely January of 1864, not 1863. Howell Cobb (1815-1868) was Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Secretary of the Treasury under James Buchanan, President of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States at Montgomery in 1861, and a Confederate Major General.
