CSA 7-L pair 5¢ blue pair tied GREENSBOROUGH ALA NOV 15 circular datestamp on all-over illustrated college cover of Southern University. Greensboro (CSA Catalog type AL-04, CV $1,250), to Mrs. Eugenia L. Munnerlyn, Bainbridge, Decatur Co(unty) Georgia. Very Fine, 1997 CSA certificate not mentioning the tiny faults on stamps. Ex Ralph Swap. $1,500. 

Charles James Munnerlyn (1822-1898) was the husband of Eugenia Munnerlyn. He was admitted to the bar after studying with the uncle of Gen. James Longstreet, but never practiced law. He inherited his father’s large property holdings at a young age, including more than 200 slaves. He was a Georgia delegate to the state secession convention. He first served as a private in the 1 Georgia Volunteers at Pensacola FL. He was forced to give up his commission due to bad health. He became a Confederate States congressman from Georgia 1862 to 1864. In 1864, he reenlisted in the Confederate Cavalry as a private, but President Jefferson Davis commissioned him a major and he was ordered to Florida to organize a regiment of reserves. Munnerlyn and his reserve shipped 100,000 head of cattle northward and he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. They were called Munnerlyn’s Cow Cavalry. In 1865, he assisted in the escape of Judah P Benjamin. After the war, he was able to retain most of his land and successfully make the transition to free labor.
